Mary and Joseph - A Musical Drama by YADAH Praise Productions @CLCValpo 12/18/12

Come one, Come All, Bring Your Family and Friends!

Join us on Tuesday Evening December 18, 2012 at 7PM at

for a Musical Dramatization of the story of Mary and Joseph performed

by Keri (Burman) & Daniel Castro of Yadah Praise Productions

 A note from the performers:

"Mary and Joseph" takes the audience back to explore Jesus' earthly parents' thoughts and feelings as they played their part in God's plan to save the world!  It highlights their perspectives from the Angel's announcement to Mary's witness of Jesus’ death and resurrection.  Everything is shared through songs and monologues.  It is a very moving story and the characters come to life before the audience's eyes!  We are so excited to share it with you guys!

The Ladies Tuesday Evening Bible Study at CLC Valpo cordially invites you to join us for Refreshments that will be served in the gathering space after the performance!

All are welcome. There is no charge to attend. A free will offering for the performers is appreciated.

A Message From Our Parish Nurse @ CLC Valpo

November is Diabetes Awareness Month
Diabetes is a serious disease.  Recent estimates project that as many as one in three American adults will have diabetes in 2050, and an additional 79 million Americans are at high risk for developing type 2 diabetes. If it isn’t managed, it can damage many parts of the body, leading to heart attacks, strokes, amputation, blindness, kidney failure and nerve damage.  But there is good news: diabetes complications can be prevented or delayed by properly managing blood glucose, blood pressure and cholesterol levels.  Eating healthy, being physically active and quitting smoking also can help lower the risk of diabetes complications.
Diabetes often goes undiagnosed because many of its symptoms seem so harmless.
Recent studies indicate that the early detection of diabetes symptoms and treatment can decrease the chance of developing the complications of diabetes. Here are symptoms to look for:
Type 1 Diabetes (diagnosed in children and young adults): Frequent urination; unusual thirst; extreme hunger; unusual weight loss; extreme fatigue and Irritability
Type 2 Diabetes: Any of the type 1 symptoms; frequent infections; blurred vision; cuts/bruises that are slow to heal; tingling/numbness in the hands/feet; recurring skin, gum, or bladder infections
Gestational Diabetes (pregnancy induced): Frequent urination; unusual thirst; extreme hunger; unusual weight loss; extreme fatigue and Irritability
If you have one or more of these diabetes symptoms, see your doctor right away.

Peace in Christ,

Social Ministry at Christ Lutheran Church in Valparaiso, Indiana

“Do not forget to do good and to help one another,
because these are the sacrifices that please God.”

Social Ministry Emphasis for August.  Each month the Social Ministry highlights a special giving opportunity.  August’s specific emphasis is to provide monetary support for ELCA’s Global Missions, the Mark and Linda Jacobson Family in Tanzania.  The Jacobsons have visited our congregation in the past during visits to the U.S.  The Shaefer Rowberg, Wangerin, and Adams families (Christ Lutheran Church (CLC) members) have visited the Jacobsons in Tanzania at various times.  CLC volunteers have sent medical supplies to Dr. Jacobson.  ELCA mission support gifts go to programs that minister directly to those in need or for educational programs for pastors, teachers, and lay people who work daily to bring the love of Christ to people in need of support for the mind, body, and spirit.  See the Social Ministry Bulletin Board concerning ELCA Global Missions and to see details about the Jacobsons medical work and ministry in Africa.  CLC’s goal of raising $3000 (a combination of extra envelope giving, Birthday Thank Offerings, & a budgeted amount) will help the Jacobsons with their ministry in Selian Hospital at Arusha, Tanzania (now in a new larger hospital).  CLC is designated as a missionary partner congregation.  Use your weekly worship service envelope and indicate “Jacobsons” on the line marked Social Ministry with the amount you wish to give in addition to your regular giving.  Thank you for your support of monthly social ministry emphasis needs.

Come Join Us - New Ladies Tuesday Evening Bible Study and Fellowship

Men of the Bible – A One Year Devotional Study of Men in Scripture
By Ann Spangler and Robert Wolgemuth

on Tuesday evenings, starting  8/21/12 from 7:15 to 8:45 pm

Book Description:
“Men of the Bible takes a close-up look at fifty-two men in Scripture - complex flesh-and-blood characters whose strengths and weaknesses often seem strangely similar to our own. Heroes and villains, sinners and prophets, commoners and kings . . . their dramatic life stories provide us with fresh perspective on the unfolding story of redemption. Though our culture differs vastly from theirs, the fundamental issues we face in relation to God and the world remain the same.”

We are a small group of ladies of all ages that enjoy fellowship, the study of God’s word (bring your own bible – we will share each others versions of scripture) and lifting up each others prayer requests.

Each Chapter of the Book has a separate focus on a different Man of the Bible from either the Old or New Testament. The book is not cumulative, so even if you miss a few weeks of this study, you won’t feel lost.

If you would like to join us, please leave a message at church 219-462-6660 or
contact Grace Safrin (facilitator) safrin@jorsm.com

Lent: : Giving Up

 LENT: Giving Up

Self Denial is about making a sacrifice that makes a difference, focusing on the Cross and reminding ourselves what Christ gave up for us.

Rev. Craig Gates of Jackson Mississippi has a great list of suggestions. He says we should: (quoted)

"GIVE UP grumbling! Instead, "In everything give thanks." Constructive criticism is OK, but "moaning, groaning, and complaining" are not Christian disciplines.

GIVE UP 10 to 15 minutes in bed! Instead, use that time in prayer, Bible study and personal devotion. A few minutes in prayer WILL keep you focused.

GIVE UP looking at other people's worst attributes. Instead concentrate on their best points. We all have faults. It is a lot easier to have people overlook our shortcomings when we overlook theirs first.

GIVE UP speaking unkindly. Instead, let your speech be generous and understanding. It costs so little to say something kind and uplifting or to offer a smile. Why not check that sharp tongue at the door?

GIVE UP your hatred of anyone or anything! Instead, learn the discipline of love. "Love covers a multitude of sins."

GIVE UP your worries and anxieties! They're too heavy for you to carry anyway. Instead, trust God with them. Anxiety is spending emotional energy on something we can do nothing about: like tomorrow! Live today and let God's grace be sufficient.

GIVE UP TV one evening a week! Instead, visit someone who's lonely or sick. There are those who are isolated by illness or age. Why isolate yourself in front of the "tube?" Give someone a precious gift: your time!

GIVE UP buying anything but essentials for yourself! Instead, give the money to God. The money you would spend on the luxuries could help someone meet basic needs. We're called to be stewards of God's riches, not consumers.

GIVE UP judging others by appearances and by the standard of the world! Instead, learn to give up yourself to God. There is only one who has the right to judge, Jesus Christ." By Rev. Craig Gates, Jackson, MS, “WHAT TO GIVE UP FOR LENT”
